Diversion Programs

Pretrial diversion, also called pretrial intervention, is a dispositional approach that offers persons charged with criminal offenses alternatives to traditional criminal court proceedings.  If the diverted person successfully completes the conditions of their diversion process, charges are dropped.  There is no one model of pretrial diversion.

In this section, you will find information on the history of pretrial diversion, the NAPSA Diversion Standards, some diversion program examples, and an overview of specialty courts.
