Veterans
Jurisdictions across the country are reporting increasing numbers of combat veterans entering the criminal justice system. Combat veterans have had unique, sometimes traumatic, experiences that may require specialized services and supports. Combat veterans must be identified early in the process so that their risk and needs are appropriately addressed. Jurisdictions should consider including a question in their pretrial interview protocol that identifies combat veteran status. Jurisdictions also should research and catalogue local resources for veterans to receive further assessments or services.
